Fenchurch Power Advances Akute Power Plant Expansion from 12MW to 26MW in Lagos
Strengthening Lagos State’s water infrastructure through reliable power generation and public-private partnership.
Every tap in Lagos starts with power.
From households and schools to hospitals and businesses, access to clean water is essential to everyday life. Yet behind every functioning water treatment facility and distribution network lies a critical requirement: a reliable and sustainable electricity supply.
Recognising this connection between energy and water security, Fenchurch Power Limited is advancing the expansion of the Akute Power Plant from 12MW to 26MW, under a concession arrangement with the Lagos State Government.
The project represents a significant step towards strengthening Lagos State’s critical infrastructure and supporting reliable water supply for up to six million residents.
A Major Milestone in the Akute Power Plant Expansion
As part of the ongoing development, representatives of Fenchurch Power, alongside the Honourable Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, inspected newly supplied containerised MWM gas engines from Jubaili Bros.
The equipment forms a critical component of the planned reconstruction and expansion of the Akute Power Plant, which will increase its generation capacity from 12 megawatts (MW) to 26 megawatts (MW).
This milestone reflects tangible progress towards delivering the energy infrastructure required to support some of Lagos State’s most important public water facilities.
Beyond increasing generation capacity, the project demonstrates Fenchurch Power’s commitment to developing practical energy solutions that address essential infrastructure needs and improve the quality of life across communities.
Powering Water Supply for Up to Six Million Lagosians
Upon completion, the expanded Akute Power Plant will provide dedicated and reliable electricity to three major Lagos Water Corporation facilities:
- Akute Waterworks
- Iju Waterworks
- Adiyan Waterworks
These facilities play important roles in Lagos State’s water supply infrastructure, supporting the treatment and distribution of water to communities across the state.
By strengthening the electricity supply to these facilities, the project is expected to reduce power-related operational disruptions, support more consistent pumping operations and improve the reliability of water production and distribution.
For residents, the impact extends beyond electricity generation.
It means supporting households that depend on running water, schools that require clean water for their pupils, hospitals where sanitation is essential and businesses whose daily operations depend on a consistent water supply.
When power stays on, pumps keep running, and water keeps flowing.
The expanded Akute Power Plant is expected to support water supply infrastructure serving up to six million Lagosians, demonstrating how investment in energy infrastructure can deliver meaningful social and economic benefits.
Strengthening Infrastructure Through Public-Private Partnership
The Akute Power Plant expansion highlights the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector in addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges.
Through its concession arrangement with the Lagos State Government, Fenchurch Power is contributing to a model of infrastructure development that combines private-sector expertise with public-sector priorities.
Such partnerships are particularly important in sectors where dependable infrastructure directly influences public welfare, economic productivity and sustainable development.
For Lagos State, the project represents an opportunity to strengthen the energy infrastructure supporting public water services.
For Fenchurch Power, it reinforces the company’s role in developing and delivering power infrastructure solutions that create value beyond electricity generation.
Fenchurch Power’s Commitment to Sustainable Infrastructure Development
At Fenchurch Power, the value of energy infrastructure is measured not only by generation capacity but also by the communities, institutions and industries it supports.
The expansion of the Akute Power Plant from 12MW to 26MW reflects this approach, connecting reliable power generation with one of the most fundamental requirements of urban life: access to clean water.
As Lagos continues to grow, investments in dependable power infrastructure will remain essential to supporting public services, strengthening economic activity and improving living standards.
Through strategic partnerships and infrastructure development, Fenchurch Power remains committed to advancing energy solutions that contribute to Nigeria’s long-term growth.
Reliable energy. Clean water. A better Lagos.
